Telesurgery Platform
Nurep is a startup whose platform allows surgical equipment reps to provide live remote support to surgical teams — drastically increasing each rep's reach and reducing costs to hospitals and patients. We were brought on for the physical interaction design and form language of the hardware.
Specifications for the hardware required an overhead camera on an articulating extendable arm. Through user feedback, we found that compactness while in storage was also critical. Several quick prototypes explored the right balance between a fully articulating arm when in use and a tidy package for storage.
We continued refining interaction details and form language through daily rapid prototyping, with each iteration informing the next.
The final design balances physical interaction design and form with off-the-shelf components and operating room regulatory requirements.
From the outset, we insisted on working directly with the manufacturing partner — a brake-formed metal specialist whose process is typically associated with boxy, low-volume production. Through close collaboration, we pushed them to achieve more organic, complex forms within their existing processes. The final production run validated that ambition.
